Welcome to our farm!
We are Kieran and Sara from Canada and Norway and we’ve lived at our farm since September 2020. The house, barn and property was a complete disaster when we bought it; full to the brim of garbage absolutely everywhere, but we saw the potential and instantly knew that this was our farm. The first 3 years were extremely hard but after 100+ trips to the recycling station we finally had a blank canvas to work with. The house was initially fully off grid, but after the first winter where the temperatures dropped down to -22 degrees celsius for a month and a half, we realized that installing electricity was necessary. After we had renovated, decorated and upgraded the indoors, we moved on to the outdoors and established and fenced in our perennial garden and mandala garden. Less than a year after we bought the farm, we were growing over 30 different vegetables, fruits and berries. We knew that we had found our passion.
Needless to say it has been a very long process making the farm feel like our own, but we are finally at the stage where the property offers recreation and relaxation. We are aiming towards self-sufficiency, and although we succumbed to getting on the grid, we are continuously exploring solutions that do not depend on the outside world. We follow permaculture and no dig principles, and we want to leave not only this place, but the earth a little better off than what it was before.
Kieran Alfonso-Moore
Kieran grew up in Ottawa, Canada, but moved out west to the temperate rainforest of British Colombia soon after graduating high school. His background is in carpentry, glass blowing, pottery and black smithing but he is also a talented artist and is enthusiastic about drawing and storytelling. He has a Permaculture Design Certificate from 2021 and has later spent hundreds of hours doing self study about permaculture, rewilding and regenerative farming methods. He feels a deep care and connection to everything living, from the smallest bug to the biggest tree. His true passion is water in the landscape and he gets extremely excited every time he sees a new frog or toad inhabiting his toad houses. He is the happiest when he is in the forest without a shirt, shoes or phone. His main projects on the farm is animal husbandry, being in charge of carpentry projects and plan the landscape and gardens according to permaculture principles.
Sara Nordby
Sara grew up in Oslo, Norway, and travelled/studied abroad for almost a decade before she started yearning for a different and more rooted life. She has a background in development studies, Spanish and documentary photography, but everything farm related she has taught herself through trial and (a lot of) error. It helps that her motto is “I've never tried that before, so I think I should definitely be able to do it” (Pippi Longstocking). She has a Permaculture Design Certificate from 2020 and uses permaculture principles systematically when she plans the garden. Her biggest passions are pumpkins, self sufficiency, bush craft and how to empower herself and others through skill sharing. She is an avid mushroom picker and soap maker. She’s also a talented piano player, however she has crippling performance anxiety so no one will ever know. Her main projects on the farm is being the logistics manager, taking care of the self sufficiency/food security aspect of the project and spoiling the animals with cuddles and treats.
